Ministry of Electricity sets plan to increase electricity production (03/03/05)

Iraq's Ministry of Electricity has prepared an ambitious plan for increasing electricity production throughout Iraq, using new generating units and newly constructed stations.

The plan aims to increase electricity production throughout the country

At a press conference, Iraqi Minister of Electricity Dr Aiham al-Samarae said that the ministry was seeking to produce 7,250MW in the coming months, realising a power supply of four hours per day once fuel is available to generators existing on the Iraqi- Jordanian borders.

Dr Al-Samarae said that three new gas stations are ready now to make available 600MW. He indicated at the joint meeting with the Ministry of Oil that he would seek to meet Iraq's fuel needs, but that disruption had hindered performance of stations and deprived citizens of 580MW.

Al- Samaree urged the Iraqi government to allocate additional sums for the ministry to carry out its plan.
