Iraqis already registered for elections in Syria (24/01/05)


As many as 14,000 Iraqis residing in Syria have been already registered for the upcoming Iraqi elections due on 30 January, said Luis Martinez, The International Organization for Migration (IOM) official in charge of the Iraqi election program in Syria.

Martinez told reporters that the registration process will come to an end after the two-day extension stating today. Publicity urging Iraqis in Syria to take part in the elections can be easily noticed everywhere in Damascus.

Representative of the Supreme Council for the Islamic Revolution in Iraq (SCIRI) in Syria and Lebanon Mohammed Saeed said in similar statements the number of Iraqis who will be registered for elections is expected to reach 15,000.

He said estimates that there are 200,000 eligible Iraqi voters in Syria is exaggerated. He said the number does not exceed 100,000 and that 50,000 of them are eligible voters.
