Iraqis in Britain register to vote (21/01/05)

Thousands of Iraqis have registered to vote in Britain in their country's historic elections, but organisers Thursday said they hoped a late surge in interest would swell the numbers taking part.

The election takes place on 30 January

Figures for the first three days of registration, which began in London, Manchester, northern England, and Glasgow, in Scotland, last Monday, show 5,869 people completed accreditation to take part in the poll. Voters in Iraq and in 36 cities across Europe, the Middle East, North America and Australia will decide on members of a transitional national assembly, which will create a constitution and appoint a government.

Stuart Poucher, head of the "Out-of-Country Voting" (OCV) programme in the UK, said in a statement It has been an enormous challenge to set up a registration and voting programme in the UK in what has been a relatively short period of time".

A spokeswoman for the OCV said that registration centres in Britain had been busy this week, but added We are expecting a surge in registrations this weekend, though it has been hard to predict how many people will take part". It is estimated about 150,000 exiled and expatriate Iraqis in the UK are eligible to vote in the 30 January election.

Figures released today showed 3,950 people registered in London during the first three days, with 1,581 in Manchester and 338 in Glasgow. Registration will continue until 19.00 (local time) this Sunday, with voting taking place in the same cities on 28-30 January.
