New airline to offer flights from Dubai to Baghdad (09/11/04)

Regular flights from the UAE to Iraq could become a reality if new operator Air Horizon's effort to launch scheduled flights between Dubai and Baghdad from 18 November is successful. Air Horizon, a company registered with the Kurdish administration in northern Iraq, yesterday sent out circulars to travel agents in the UAE announcing daily flights to Baghdad and Arbil from Dubai.

Bravura Tours has been appointed the airline's general sales agent (GSA) in Dubai. The flight route has been structured as Dubai-Baghdad-Arbil-Baghdad-Dubai, and the return airfare will be about Dh1,990 excluding tax, and will be commissionable. The company plans to operate a leased Boeing 737 with 125 seats. It will receive a second aircraft later this month.

"Flights will leave Dubai at 8am every day. We have sent out circulars to all the travel agents advising them on airfares and other details so that they can start selling tickets on our behalf," said an official. "We will use Dubai as a second gateway for Iraqi nationals to travel abroad."

Some travel agents confirmed receiving the notification. But there is a certain amount of confusion surrounding the airline and its ticket stock. A Dubai Department of Civil Aviation spokesperson said, "While Air Horizon has not yet sought nor been granted approval, a meeting is expected to take place in the next few days."
