Navy to protect Iraq oil (01/10/08)

A new detachment of Australian sailors from the Royal Australian Navy (RAN) is being deployed to Iraq.

Task Force 158 will be deployed to the Persian Gulf to protect the flow of Iraq's oil.

The 40-man contingent will take charge of the coalition fleet protecting the oil terminals in the northern Arabian gulf.

RAN Commodore Bruce Kafer says his men will have the added task of training their Iraqi counterparts.

Much of Iraq's foreign income is generated by the oil fields - money which is used in reconstruction efforts throughout the country.
