Ministry of Agriculture allots IQD 300 billion to support farmers (16/04/08)

Iraq's ministry of agriculture continues to support farmers and peasants in all governorates allotting IQD 300 billion to raise the standard of agriculture in Iraq according to development plans adopted by the ministry.

An official source within the ministry who spoke to Al-Sabah newspaper said that the ministry continues to back the production process of agricultural crops within this year's subsidy budget of IQD 300 billion.

These subsidies include partial funding for pesticides, green houses, various types of fertilizers, sprinklers, insecticides and other equipment.

The ministry of agriculture has demanded that the ministerial council increases the subsidies from IQD 300 billion to IQD 500 billion in order to more efficiently support the farmers through what the ministry considers as exceptional circumstances that the country’s farmers are facing, and ultimately bring farming back to a normal level.

Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki announced an initiative to develop the agricultural sector in all governorates with allotments that have exceeded IQD 600 billion.

The ministerial source also indicated that the Ministry of Agriculture has started a broad based campaign to restructure its institutions countrywide in order to carry out al-Maliki's initiative.
