Iraq to increase oil production to 3.5 million BPD by 2009 (11/09/07)

Iraqi Minister of Oil Hussain al-Shahristani said in Dubai that Iraq intends to increase its oil production to 3.5m barrels per day (BPD) by the end of 2009 rising to 6 million BPD within a decade.

He also said the country will build pipes to export oil and liquefied gas to Syria and Iran.

Al-Shahristani told the press that Iraq will supply Syria with 50m cubic feet of liquefied gas a day and Iran with 100,000 barrels of crude oil per day via pipes which will be built during the next 12 months. He added that a tender to build the Iraqi side of a small pipe line to Deir el-Zoar, east Syria, will be announced in September.

Al-Shahristani said the deal with Iran includes the building of pipe lines from Basra in southern Iraq to the Abbadan Iranian oil refinery.

Iraq, a member in the Oil Producing and Exporting Countries (OPEC), expects its oil production to steadily increase during the next ten years to reach 6m barrels per day from the current 2.5m, but its plans depend on the security situation.

The production growth also depends on the long awaited federal oil and gas law which aims at attracting foreign investments estimated at billions of dollars by determining the basic principles of operation.
