The US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Gulf Region South provided oversight for Central Fire Station of Basrah City renovations using Iraqi Reconstruction Funds. The work started in early May and was completed on 9 October.

Better facilities now available for firemen

Renovations to the two-story, 1,500-square-meter fire station include a fresh coat of paint on the outside, restored roof and foundation, new gate at the entrance and repairs to the 20-space, covered parking garage.

Inside workers plastered and painted the hallways, kitchen, dining room, bathrooms and 21 offices and training rooms, installed ceramic tiles and replaced door hardware. In addition, workers installed water coolers and five air conditioning units.

The renovated fire station will provide better facilities for firemen which will enable them to protect 1.4 million residents of the city of Basrah, according to USACE. Anwar Al Huijh Company was the general contractor and employed about 50 Iraqi workers daily on the project.
