Jordan has eased restrictions on the flow of trucks to and from Iraq, a senior Iraqi Trade Ministry official said.

Qais al-Hassan said Jordanian authorities have agreed to set up “special border posts and outlets” for thousands of trucks that ply the highway between the countries.

The restrictions are said to have caused delays in the arrival of essential items, mainly foodstuffs.

“The (Jordanian) Trade Ministry has ordered the opening of new outlets for the entry and exit of Iraqi trucks to facilitate the transport of food stuffs and other goods,” Hassan said in a statement.

He said his discussions in Amman touched upon ways of boosting bilateral trade. Most of the trucks carrying goods to Iraq via Aqaba currently either belong to the Iraqi Trade Ministry or private sector.
