"Iraqi authorities have said that they would launch tenders for five or six licences in October or November. We will submit offers. Iraq is a promising market," Faysal Hamad Al Ayyar said in Algiers.

"We are also interested in the third Egypt licence that is expected to be launched in October. Egypt is a big market," he added on the sidelines of a news conference to present the company's Algerian unit's overview of the past year.

Wataniya has one million subscribers in Algeria, a year after it won a licence there following a bid of $421 million.

It is ranked third behind Egypt's Orascom Telecom, with more than five million users and state-run Mobilis, which has three million clients.

Wataniya, known also as National Mobile Telecommunications Company., won a licence in 2003 to develop a network in Northern Iraq. It has one million subscribers in the country, Al Ayyar said.
