Iraq will import heavily in wheat

"Three days ago we sent the invitations for companies to buy about one million tonnes of wheat. We will do the same every 40 days for the same amount until the new year," he said, adding that Iraq did not currently need flour and would focus on wheat purchases.

Iraq, a major oil producer, usually consumes about four million tonnes of wheat each year.

Mawloud said Iraq would not limit its purchases to any one country, and was seeking quality at a competitive price.

He said shipments of 1.4 million tonnes of wheat purchased in August were heading towards Iraq.
