Summit Report |
A key Iraqi business summit organised for the security, defence and information and communications technology sector concluded in Sharjah, UAE on Wednesday 13 September, with Iraqi Minister for National Security Affairs H.E. Sharwan K Sabti Waili declaring the summit a great success. |
|
The Iraq Security, Technology & Communications Summit (ISTC), organised by the Iraq Development Program, was the first event of its kind to take place, as Iraq looks to develop its internal protection measures and use advanced technology solutions to improve its information and communications infrastructure.
Other key members of the Iraq ministerial delegation included Minister of Communication H.E. Mohammed Tawfiq Allawi, Deputy Minister of Interior H.E. Adnan Al-Asadi, Deputy Minister of Defence H.E. Sabah Dawid Dahir, Deputy Minister of Industry H.E. Munqith Jasim Al-Bakir and Deputy Minister of Science & Technology H.E. Samir Mohammed Raoof.
The delegation also featured representation from the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG), who were there to focus on the many commercial opportunities available in northern Iraqi-Kurdistan. |

The unique aspect of the Iraq Development Program (IDP) is in its ability to go far beyond a mere ‘talking shop’, doing more than just raising issues but indeed transcending this into tangible business results. The ISTC Summit adhered to those intrinsic values, with each day of the two-day event split into two key aspects; identification of core commercial needs from each ministry through a series of morning presentations – preceded on Day One by addresses from the senior officials present – followed by afternoon roundtable sessions, where relevant companies were given the opportunity to meet with the ministries and discuss how best to meet the stated requirements.
These opportunities proved invaluable to all participants, with the various ministers, deputy ministers and director generals all taking meetings long into the afternoon and in some cases the evening.

With the ministries present all having their specific areas of interest with the key joint themes of security and ICT, a wide range of issues were covered, from the need to develop telecommunications infrastructure to tackling issues of internal security and civil defence to the importance of developing Internet capabilities and improving access to emerging communications technology. A series of in-depth PowerPoint presentations were given over the two days, these can be accessed through the following links.
The ministerial addresses and presentations were augmented by a series of visual displays from assisting coalition associations and institutions.
|
|
These included presentation from Timothy B. Mills, recently appointed President of AmCham-Iraq, Lt Commander Dave Grambo of NATO and Johann Jones, Director of the Private Security Companies Association of Iraq (PSCAI). The latter organisation in particular has been working actively with the Iraqi Ministry of Interior in achieving accreditation standards for private security companies looking to operate in Iraq.
They also made themselves available for meetings over the course of the two days, offering crucial counsel on the requirements for operating successfully in Iraq.

The summit was hugely well-received by the attending corporate delegates, many of whom were able to secure contracts and agree to provide services during the summit. The conference model met with unanimous approval, with the opportunity for private face-to-face time with ministers and ministerial officials providing excellent return on investment.
The summit ended on a hugely positive note, with H.E. Sharwan K Sabti Waili declaring the summit a huge success and affirming his commitment to working closely with the IDP in subsequent events, including follow-up ISTC Summit currently planned to take place in Sharjah, UAE on 27-28 February 2007. News of this will be announced shortly. |
