Iraqi government officials in Amman for crucial economic summit (28/06/05)

More than 40 Iraqi government officials converged on Amman today to take part in the three day Iraq Development Program economic summit. The summit brings together key Iraqi officials, business people and global corporations under one roof to work towards one goal, the rebuilding of Iraq.

The official Iraqi government delegation – consisting of four ministers, deputy ministers as well other senior representatives from Iraq’s various ministries – opened the summit exhibition and meeting area, which includes more than 500 global corporations from the US, Europe, Middle East and Asia and over 100 Iraqi businesses.

The event is the second Iraq Development Program summit to take place in Amman, the first having been held in November of last year, resulting in the formation of key business agreements between Iraqi companies and their western counterparts. More agreements are expected to be reached at this summit during the closed-door meetings that will take place between officials and big corporations, while some of the project ideas initiated at the first gathering will be expanded on. Focus will be placed on crucial business sectors such as engineering, construction, electricity and water.

With the new national constitution imminent, the principal aim of the government is the redevelopment of Iraq, with the ministries focusing primarily on rebuilding the country’s infrastructure.

The summit continues until Thursday.
